Water-Vapor Prostate Treatment with Dr. Sarat Sabharwal

More treatment choices can make a prostate-care conversation feel both hopeful and complicated. Dr. Sarat Sabharwal offers water-vapor prostate tissue ablation and helps patients understand where it may fit within an individualized care plan.

A recent Orlando Health article highlighted the Vanquish® Water Vapor System. Here is what patients should know before discussing this approach with Dr. Sabharwal.

What is water-vapor ablation?

The Vanquish system delivers energy carried by water vapor to targeted prostate tissue through an instrument passed into the urethra. Imaging helps the physician plan treatment. The procedure is generally performed under anesthesia in an outpatient setting, and a urinary catheter may be needed afterward.

Water-vapor ablation and HIFU use different forms of energy. HIFU uses focused ultrasound; Vanquish uses water vapor. Neither option is appropriate for every patient.

Understanding FDA clearance

Vanquish has FDA 510(k) clearance for thermal ablation of targeted prostate tissue through a transurethral approach. The FDA has not evaluated the device for treating a specific disease, including prostate cancer. Its long-term cancer-treatment outcomes have not been established. Device clearance should not be read as FDA approval of a prostate-cancer cure.

How Dr. Sabharwal approaches the decision

The first step is a careful review of your diagnosis, biopsy findings, imaging, overall health, and priorities. Ask how each option compares with active surveillance, surgery, radiation, or other care appropriate to your cancer’s stage and risk level.

A discussion should cover possible urinary and sexual side effects, catheter use, recovery, the chance of needing further treatment, and the follow-up plan. Potential risks include infection, bleeding, urinary difficulties, and changes in sexual function. Individual outcomes vary.

HIFU is another option to discuss

Dr. Sabharwal also offers HIFU for prostate tissue ablation. You can read about HIFU and ask which approach, if any, fits your findings. The choice should reflect your clinical situation and an informed discussion of benefits, uncertainties, and alternatives.

Your questions belong in the conversation

  • What do my biopsy and imaging results mean for my options?
  • What is known—and still being studied—about this treatment?
  • What follow-up will I need, and what happens if more treatment is required?

This information supports a conversation with your clinician and does not determine whether a treatment is appropriate for you.
